A group of people ‘captured’ an abandoned house on 21 Bompas Road in Dunkeld West. Neighbours have complained about this house not being orderly with daily occurrences of noise, illegal brewing, and drinking.
Approximately 50 people evicted on Tuesday after they illegally occupy private property in the luxurious northern suburb. The house owner, who is overseas, obtained an eviction order from the courts, and the eviction executed by the Red Ants’ private evictions company.
After being evicted, the non-profit human rights lawyers, the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (Seri), took the case and the matter went to the high court. Seri took the case on the premise that the evictions without a court order violated section 26 (3) of the constitution.
Seri claims some people have been living at the house for the past 17 years. Moreover, local ward councillor Martin Williams says that the problems began in 2017 when a group of people moved in, and the neighbours complained as the group grew bigger and bigger.
In Johannesburg, the high court has ordered that house invaders who occupied the multimillion-rand abandoned house in Dunkeld West returned to the premises for now.
