Police confirm that the 23-year old truck driver who is responsible for the multi-car pile up in Umhlanga, Durban has handed himself in.
This after the driver fled the scene of a horrific pile-up on the M41 on Monday, 06 March, which resulted in over 35 vehicles being crushed.
It is believed the driver lost control of the truck but police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.
The truck driver handed himself over to police on Tuesday, 07 March and will be appearing in court soon.
While there were no casualties in the multi-car pile up, several people were injured, including a pregnant woman who was rushed to hospital.
MEC for Transport in KwaZulu-Natal, Sipho Hlomuka said concern is growing over the number of road accidents involving trucks in the province.
“We have ordered an investigation so that those responsible could be held accountable. As government, we have a targeted programme focusing on trucks.
We will continue engaging with the freight and logistics sector to adhere to the laws. We also wish a speedy recovery to all those affected by this accident, including those who suffered trauma and physical injuries.”
A forensic investigation of the truck will be underway and a team of investigators will work on reconstructing the scene.
