Tropical Storm Filipo will bring a weekend of thunderstorms and heavy rain with the South African Weather Services (SAWS) issuing a Yellow Level 2 warning for parts of the country.
Temperatures are expected to drop in Gauteng, with cloudy conditions persisting for much of Friday, 15 March.
The current temperature in Gauteng is 18° with the warning of heavy downpours, excessive lightning, damaging winds and large amounts of small hail is expected over parts of Gauteng and the eastern part of the North West province on Friday.
These severe thunderstorms are expected to cause damage to property and there’s a strong chance of wind blowing roofs off, particularly in informal settlements.
Lightning and flooding of susceptible roads and bridges are also highly likely and people in these parts are urged to stay safe and take necessary precautions.
The thunderstorms and heavy rains are said to be a result of Tropical Storm Filipo, which made landfall in Mozambique on Tuesday, 12 March and impacted KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga on Wednesday.
An Orange Level 6 warning has been issued for these two provinces, and Filipo has already affected 6 villages in Nkomazi Mpumalanga, where about 90 houses were damaged by the heavy rains and strong winds.
