SA and Zimbabwe sign an agreement for treated water transfer to Musina.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the supply of treated water to Musina was signed on Thursday by Zimbabwe’s Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, and Rural Development, Dr. Anxious Jongwe Masuka, and Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to the Water and Sanitation Department Director General, Dr Sean Philips on the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

132,009 people are living in the Musina Local Municipality, spread throughout 192 localities and the town of Musina. Due to its dry climate and scarcity of water sources, the region mostly depends on groundwater.
“South Africa and Zimbabwe signed a bilateral agreement on Co-operation on Water Resources Management and the Establishment and Functioning of the Joint Water Commission (JWC) in 2015,
“During the Commission Sitting, the four countries will sign a commitment to implement the Integrated Transboundary River Basin Management for the Sustainable Development of the Limpopo River Basin.
“The agreement will strengthen South Africa’s relations with the three riparian states which share the basin and use water from the river to support various socio-economic activities, including agriculture, tourism, energy generation, as well as for domestic use,”

Under the terms of the bilateral agreement, the Republic of Zimbabwe’s Beitbridge Water Treatment Works will be able to supply Musina, South Africa, with treated water at a rate of around 15 million cubic meters per year (m3/a), or 41 million liters per day.
