Tremor reported in parts of Soweto and Roodepoort over the weekend.
Several communities, notably Soweto and Krugersdorp on the West Rand, felt the tremor on Saturday just before 7 o’clock.
The occurrence was determined to have happened on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at about 18:46, according to the Council for Geoscience (CGS).
CGS also confirmed that the tremor was 2 kilometres south of Harmony Doornkop Gold Mine.
“The earthquake registered a local magnitude of approximately 2.98, as recorded by the South African National Seismograph Network (SANS). The epicentre was located south of Johannesburg, 2 kilometres south of Harmony Doornkop Gold Mine,” the council said.

In the last two weeks, there were numerous incidents that happened in Johannesburg.
On 19 July, the underground explosion tore through the long stretch of road, damaging at least 23 vehicles, some filled with passengers.
On Friday, 21 July, at approximately 11h30 a suspected hydrogen gas explosion occurred at a private business in Chloorkop, Kempton Park.

Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi also took to social media to confirm the tremor over the weekend and shared that emergency teams were dispatched to look into it.
