South Africans following the “Bonnie and Clyde” couple flocked to showmax from Friday, 15 March to watch the anticipated documentary Tracking Thabo Bester.
Hoping to get an understanding as to how influential celebrity aesthetics practitioner, Dr Nandipha Magudumana met and fell in love with her convicted rapist and murderer partner in crime, Thabo Bester.
However, the 4-part documentary failed to uncover the convict and doctor’s love story and ultimately rehashed all the information that is already public knowledge.
Offering a more detailed first hand experience from the journalist who broke the story of Bester’s escape from the Mangaung Correctional Center in May 2022, those following the case were still left questioning how Dr Nandipha fell into Bester’s web of lies.
How did they meet? This is one of the most frequently asked questions and to date, there isn’t a definite answer other than Dr Nandipha started visiting Bester in prison from 2017.
Marecia Damons, who won an award for her story on Bester shared how her intuition led to her discovering that Bester didn’t die in his prison cell.
Apart from following Damons’ thought process as she pieced together the puzzle around Bester’s escape, the documentary lacked the capitivating hook that would have come by painting the picture of how the convict and doctor began their love affair.
While Tracking Thabo Bester did include an interview with Nkosinathi “Nathi” Sekeleni, Dr Nandipha’s older brother there were still many loopholes as to how thei love story unfolds.
The sentiment online after the documentary aired was that yes, Tracking Thabo Bester did detail how the couple concocted dubious business endeavours to target people, but it did not uncover how and why Dr Nandipha gave up her life, family and kids to aid and abet a criminal.
