The Thabo Bester Story: The Facebook rapist, the Celebrity Doctor and the Escape from Cell 35, will be available in bookstores in October.
In the book, the Ground Up journalists who first broke news of Bester’s escape from the Mangaung Correctional Center, tell the full story of Bester and Dr Nandipha Magudumana, covering their unlikely love affair, and how the pair faked Bester’s death and staged his escape.
Marecia Damons and Daniel Steyn, who won the Nat Nakasa Award for Media Integrity for their work on the Bester story, will have their book on shelves from 27 October.
Sharing the news to her Instagram, Damons says she and Steyn were working on the book for the past few months, and their book will include everything they know about South Africa’s “Bonnie and Clyde” to date.
“NB Publishers is proud of this remarkable achievement in investigative journalism which comes in anticipation of an equally compelling book authored by Marecia Damons and Daniel Steyn.
Thabo Bester: The Facebook Rapist, the Celebrity Doctor and the Escape from Cell 35 is scheduled to be published on October 27.
This book promises to provide an even deeper dive into this astonishing narrative that has gripped the nation.”
Magudumana, her father, along with several G4S security employees await their fate in court, over their involvement in Bester’s escape in May 2022.
The pair were apprehended in Tanzania in April 2023, after Damons and Steyn broke the story that Bester was spotted with Magudumana shopping in Sandton City a few months after his escape.
