Three South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grant administrators were arrested during a raid at the SASSA offices in De Villiers Street in Johannesburg CBD on Friday morning.
The raid follows the previous month’s arrest of four individuals in Soweto, including two women and an Ethiopian national, who were caught using fraudulent SASSA cards to withdraw funds at a Shoprite store.
Authorities discovered 139 SASSA cards in their possession, linking the group to the theft of over R260 million from grant beneficiaries through the use of “ghost” SASSA cards.
The arrests are part of a broader police operation targeting widespread fraud involving SASSA grants.
Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo has shared that the investigation is ongoing, with authorities determined to dismantle the networks responsible for these fraudulent activities.
“We are still actively searching and will continue investigating until all suspects are apprehended.
“We are talking about the four suspects arrested in February and the seven we are looking for today. In total, that makes eleven. But we believe it is a much bigger syndicate. One of the main suspects we are still searching for is believed to be the mastermind behind the operation,” said Masondo.
