A woman has tragically lost her life after her vehicle was swept away by intense floodwaters that caused significant destruction and disruption across KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday night.
Her body was recovered from a river in Pinetown.
The incident occurred as torrential rains overwhelmed the region, causing rapid water level rises, particularly in areas like Stapleton Road, Pinetown. The woman’s vehicle was later discovered on Gordon Road in Sarnia, Pinetown, prompting a temporary road closure for safe retrieval.
According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson, the deceased is believed to be in her early 50s. Rescue efforts were hampered by the powerful currents, ultimately proving unsuccessful.
The South African Weather Service had issued a Level 6 warning for severe rainfall, foreshadowing the scale of the disaster. This recent flooding comes just a month after similar weather conditions claimed at least 22 lives and caused widespread damage in the province.
As of Friday, numerous roads remain closed, and cleanup operations are underway to clear debris and fallen trees that are obstructing roadways. Emergency services and municipal teams are working tirelessly to restore normalcy in the affected areas.
