“Therefore, technology is a key component of our overall system. We recognise that and we are working on exactly those various areas in which technology is being used”.
The briefing comes as the country continues to see escalating crime levels, with Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases skyrocketing – especially in Gauteng.
Gauteng contributed nearly 27% to the overall national crime rate in the 4th quarter of the 2024/25 financial year.
Just two weeks ago, 14-year-old Likhona Fose was found killed not far from her home in Roodepoort, a few days after she went missing, with her genitals mutilated.
Two suspects, including a Pakistani national, were arrested. The Pakistani national, who’s a Spaza shop owner in Roodepoort has since been cleared of any wrongdoing by the police.
Meanwhile, 30-year-old Olorato Mongale also had her life taken away last month- after she had gone on a date.
Mchunu says the strengthening of crime intelligence will assist police in moving from reactive to proactive policing.
