Pick n Pay founder, Raymond Ackerman has died at the age of 92, on Wednesday, 06 September.
The businessman who came from a retailing family, is survived by his wife, Wendy, children, Gareth, Kathy, Suzanne, and Jonathan, 12 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
Ackerman’s father founded the Ackermans clothing store after World War 1, and in 1967 the retail mogul founded Pick n Pay after buying 4 stores in Cape Town.
News of the entrepreneurs death was confirmed by Pick n Pay on Thursday, 07 September, who say the country has lost a brilliant patriot who always saw a positive future for South Africa.
“From the outset, Raymond Ackerman lived by the core values that the customer is queen, that we must treat others as we would wish to be treated, and that doing good is good business.
These values have guided the business for over 56-years, and today the Pick n Pay group serves millions of customers in more than 2 000 stores across South Africa, and 7 other countries.
His business philosophy was underpinned by the “four legs of the table”, namely, Administration, Social Responsibility and Marketing, People and Merchandise, with the customer on top.”
Ackerman was born on 10 March 1931.
With profound sadness we announce that Pick n Pay founder Raymond Ackerman has passed away.
