The Eastern Cape Provincial Government has confirmed the death of at least nine people due to flooding and bad weather conditions in various areas of the OR Tambo District Municipality.
This comes after the police recovered six bodies along Decoligny village in Mthatha and a seventh body in Tsolo near Bedlana River on Tuesday, 11 June 2025.
Eastern Cape government spokesperson, Khuselwa Rantjie, stated that the search is still underway for a minibus carrying schoolchildren that was swept away early on Tuesday morning.
“As the weather persists, the province’s priority is the safety and well-being of residents, while working to mitigate damage to infrastructure and restore essential services,” said Rantjie.
Meanwhile, Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has reportedly dispatched members of the executive council to assist the municipality in rescuing residents and supplying necessary resources.
“This is a devastating reminder of nature’s force. We urge everyone to exercise extra caution in areas prone to flooding. Our disaster response teams are on high alert and committed to ensuring the community’s safety,” Mabuyane said.
