The man accused of murdering 14-year-old Likhona Fose is now free, after the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) withdrew charges against him.
Mduduzi Mnisi, who was out on parole at the time of the teenager’s death, had been facing several charges, including premeditated murder.
Likhona’s mutilated body was discovered in a veld near her home in June, sparking widespread outrage in communities and on social media over the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa.
During the investigation, a Pakistani national was also questioned but later released due to a lack of evidence linking him to the crime.
Mnisi appeared several times before the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court, where he consistently maintained his innocence.
He told the court he had never met Likhona and only learned about her after being taken in for questioning.
NPA spokesperson in Gauteng, Phindi Mjonondwane, confirmed that investigations supported Mnisi’s affidavit, which stated he was in Daveyton at the time of the crime.
Investigations into the tragic murder of Likhona Fose are still ongoing.
