Khutsong residents are on dangerous territory with sinkholes that are claiming large parts of the West Rand township.
On Monday, 13 February two members of the community got sucked into a large sinkhole as they were walking.
The father and daughter were rescued by the community who came to their rescue in Khutsong, Khaya Lethu section.
A number of homes in the area are falling apart and may collapse altogether, as the heavy rains impacts the integrity of the ground.
Last week part of the Relebogile High School in Khutsong was swallowed by a large sinkhole.
Residents feel helpless with no where else to go, and feel like they’re sitting ducks with the land waiting to cave in under them.
It is reported that the land in Khutsong is laden with dolomite, which poses a threat to properties and the lives of residents.
Dolomite rock formations are found in many parts of the Gauteng, North-West and Mpumalanga provinces.
The community says lack of maintenance in the area is also adding to their situation.
Blocked pipes have resulted in sewage spilling onto the roads which is worsening the sinkhole crisis.
