Isiphithiphithi: news you may have missed 17/05

Lady R Saga

Lady R also known as #LadyRussiagate is the most talked about cargo ship right now.

According to the US ambassador to South Africa, the ship secretly docked at Simon’s Town Naval base in December 2022 and was loaded with South African military supplies for use in the Russian-Ukraine war.

The South African president launched an independent investigation in response to the allegations made by the US ambassador. Meanwhile, the EFF’s Julius Malema defended the president by saying that the US concerns are misplaced. South Africa does not have the capacity to supply Russia with weapons.

Phemelo Motene sheds light on foreign policy related to the allegations of the arms deal sale with political analyst Gogo Aubrey Matshiqi:

Did the US Ambassador to South Africa apologise for the allegations made?

Minister Naledi speaks to Phemelo Motene about whether or not the US ambassador Reuben Brigety apologised for the allegations he made.

She further discusses whether she was aware of Lady R docking in Simon’s Town and whether she knew about a transfer of weaponry.

How is Jamie Foxx doing?

A series of reports on the health status of Jamie Foxx shared that because of medical complications, the actor was in and out of the hospital.

Prior to the latest report news escalated from the actor being in hospital to the family preparing for the worst.

The latest report made by Foxx’s daughter shares that Foxx is not in the hospital and that his current health status is good.

Will the grid collapse as Malema says

The leader of the EFF, Julius Malema called a press conference to announce that South Africa will experience a complete grid collapse in the next two weeks.

“A grid collapse is a reality that South Africans must know. We are heading to darkness and ANC politicians are continuing business as usual as if we are not in a crisis.

We are in a deep, deep, deep crisis. Cellphone networks will not work, and even water. If we have it we won’t receive it, because it needs electricity to be pumped to homes and businesses.

Nothing is going to function. We are heading for a disaster, worse than what Covid-19 was.”

What would happen if South Africa experienced a grid collapse?

A complete grid collapse would mean a national blackout. Key areas that will be negatively affected as listed by Eskom are:

  • Telecommunications
  • Water
  • Liquid Fuel
  • Security

A national blackout will happen with little to no warning. The system operator can warn the country if the system is at increased risk and restoring power could take several days depending on the root cause.

Solar-powered portable desks for children in Soweto

Thanks to private funding the Goza Primary School received 150 portable desks fitted with solar panels to help children study at home during load shedding hours.

The desks were designed as a science project six years ago by Thalita Boodhram. She hopes that more corporates can sponsor children to get through load shedding.

This follows concerns about the impact that load shedding has on the learning ability of children in the foundation phase by Early Childhood Development Centres.

Hijacking peak hours warning

Hijackers are targeting drivers mostly between the hours of 9 PM and 5 AM.

VW Polos and Nissan NP200 bakkies are also common targets for most criminals.

There’s a 54% risk of being hijacked whilst driving between 05h00 to 12h00, and a 75% risk of hijacking when a vehicle is parked at night from 21h00 to 05h00.

Data from Naked Insurance shows the time vehicles were more likely to be targeted, with the risks being higher during load shedding.

Drivers are urged to exercise caution and be mindful of their surroundings at all times.

If a driver suspects a vehicle is following them, it is advised to drive past their home and head to a busy place, such as a garage, hospital, or police station.

He communicated his accomplishment on social media saying: “I’m so grateful for this opportunity to share a message to the next generation of artists, producers, vocalists, arrangers, dancers and more. Be brave and I hope your spark never goes away.”
