Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema has warned that the country will be plunged into darkness in the next two weeks because there will a total grid collapse.
Malema addressed media on Monday, 15 May from the party’s head offices in the Johannesburg CBD, where he claimed the ANC and Eskom heads don’t want to admit to citizens that the grid is collapsing.
“A grid collapse is a reality that South Africans must know. We are heading to darkness and ANC politicians are continuing business as usual, as if we are not in a crisis.
We are in a deep, deep, deep crisis. Cellphone networks will not work, water even if we have it we won’t receive it, because it needs electricity to be pumped to homes and businesses.
Nothing is going to function. We are heading for a disaster, worse than what Covid-19 was.”
EFF leader, Julius Malema says South Africa will be plunged into darkness in the next two weeks
Malema’s warning comes despite President Cyril Ramaphosa, Public Enterprises Minister, Pravin Gordhan and Minister of Electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa claiming they have the loadshedding situation under control.
Last week, the President said South Africans would be the first to know if the grid collapses, saying there were a number of factors to consider before that even happens.
However, Malema said government is hiding just how dire the power crisis is to keep the taxpayers belief that all is well.
Malema said even those with solar panels and generators will not survive because that would mean keeping generators on 24/7, and solar panels will only work for those house and businesses who can afford it.
For the rest, it’s permanent darkness that awaits because Eskom is unable to turn the rolling blackouts around.
The EFF leader said Eskom is talking about Stages 10 to 16 just to make the situation sounds “nice” when the reality is that it’s darkness that’s around the corner.
A total grid collapse is likely if the power utility sees several, if not all it’s power stations go down at the same time.
This would result in a total blackout which would be difficult to repair and get the system back up and running because there won’t be electricity to make repairs.
If this happens, it could mean weeks of rolling blackouts for the country.
