Gauteng Health MEC for Community Safety, Faith Nonhlanhla Mazibuko has warned parents against the new trend that kids in schools are using to get high.
The MEC was doing a school safety visit at Kitso Primary School and was alerted to the usage of Allergex elixir mixture by one of the learners in the school.

She took to social media to express her disappointment with this new trend by learners who get high while at school.
“When we arrived at Kitso Primary school in Evaton this morning, to address school safety issues, teachers showed us a mixture of allergex they found on a grade 7 learner. Our kids drink this mixture to get a high. It is very dangerous, please guard against kids using it” she said.

According to one social media user, this mixture is also called ‘lean’ and is not entirely a new trend.
“This has been happening for a while. They buy Sprite and Cough syrup and mix it. Then drink them in these cups. Cough syrup doesn’t need a prescription to be bought same as allergex” says @TTBambo on Twitter
In 2020, a report by Stats SA reported revealed that children begin to use drugs and alcohol very early because they are trying to cope with a traumatic experience they have faced while at school, such as bullying.
Parents are warned to be vigilant and watch any changes in behaviour in their children.
