Gauteng has seen a welcome decrease in overall crime during the busy festive season, according to the latest police statistics released by Provincial Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni.
Between October and December 2024, crime in the province dropped by 6.5%, representing a decrease of 7563 reported incidents.
Commissioner Mthombeni praised the efforts of law enforcement agencies in achieving this reduction, especially during a period known for increased criminal activity due to the influx of holiday travelers.
“This is a positive step and a testament to the hard work of our officers,” Mthombeni said.
The statistics revealed a notable 4.7% decrease in contact crimes, which include assault and robbery. This translates to 48 929 incidents in 2024, down from 51 327 in the same period the previous year. Murder rates also saw a decline, dropping by 2.5% from 1787 to 1741 cases.
