- SAPS has dismissed reports claiming that the alleged “Kempton Park killer” was spotted in Potchefstroom, North West.
- Police say they have not found any official report or complaint confirming the claims.
- The warning comes as residents remain on edge following the discovery of eight women’s bodies across parts of Gauteng in recent weeks.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) says reports making the rounds that the alleged “Kempton Park serial killer” was spotted in Potchefstroom, North West, are untrue and misleading.
“The public is urged not to treat this circulating message as an official SAPS alert unless and until it is confirmed through SAPS communication channels,” said national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.
Mathe says Potchefstroom police have not found an official report or complaint confirming these claims.
The reports come as the country remains in panic mode following the discovery of eight dead women in Gauteng over a space of a few weeks.
The women were found in different areas, having been murdered, with some sexually assaulted and their bodies discarded in public.
Four of the women were found in Kempton Park and Rhodesfield including 38-year-old runner Elizabeth Moselakgomo, who has since been identified by her family.
Three women were found in Olifantsfontein, while another woman was found in Kwa-Thema, Springs.
All these areas fall under the City of Ekurhuleni, with women now living in fear more than ever following the discoveries.
Members of the public have been encouraged to observe sensible personal-safety precautions, particularly after dark.
“SAPS safety guidance includes avoiding walking alone where possible, using well-lit areas and remaining aware of one’s surroundings.
Residents and businesses who may have information relating to an actual criminal incident should report it to the police rather than attempting to investigate or confront any person themselves.”
