Police discovered the bodies of 6 suspected Zama Zamas on Wednesday, 14 September.
Initial reports suggested that at least 4 bodies were found but the number has since risen to 6.
The bodies were found close to the Maraisburg off-ramp on the N1 highway in the early hours of the morning.
According to reports, police say there are various causes of death, with indications that the victims were shot, stabbed and burnt to death.
SAPS spokesperson Brenda Muridili said police were alerted after several people alerted them to the bodies strewn on the road.
“On arrival at the scene, police combed the scene and 6 bodies were discovered. At this stage we do not know what the motive is. The bodies are confirmed to have gunshot wounds, and it is suspected all 6 were Zama Zamas in the area. Police will be investigating 6 counts of murder.”
While it remains unconfirmed that the victims were suspected Zama Zamas, authorities say all signs point to another retaliation against the illegal miners in the area.
Earlier this year, residents of Krugersdorp took matter into their own hands to rid their community from the criminal activities they say the Zama Zamas orchestrate.
This came after the shocking gang rape of 8 women which were linked to the illegal miners.
Police say they will investigate the circumstances surrounding these deaths.
