Ed Sheeran has dropped his new album, “Subtract” which is the last in the singer and songwriter’s mathematical series of albums.
This comes after the Peru hitmaker won an 8-year copyright lawsuit over his 2014 hit, Thinking Out Loud.
Sheeran was accused of using the heart of Marvin Gaye’s 1973 classic, Let’s Get It On, to complete his own track.
The British artist who said he would quit music if he was found guilty of the copyright infringement, expressed his happiness at being able to continue his “day job” after all.
Taking to his Instagram, Sheeran shared news of his album drop with his 43.5 million fans.
“I kinda feel a bit all over the place at the moment. I made this album as a way to make sense of things that go on inside my head, and am immensely proud of it.
I woke up this morning and just felt lighter. Lighter that the album is in the world, and lighter that people are connecting with it on such a deep and meaningful level.
The only thing I want from this album is that people feel something when they listen to it.
It makes us all feel less alone when we realize our most embarrassing, darkest feelings are things that everyone goes through.”
Sheeran had been working on Subtract for a decade, trying to sculpt the perfect acoustic album, writing and recording hundreds of songs with a vision of what he thought the album should be.
But, then at the start of 2022, a series of events changed his life, his mental health and ultimately the way he views music and art.
For Sheeran, writing songs is his therapy, helping him make sense of his feelings. He says he wrote without much thought over what the songs would be, he just wrote whatever tumbled out.
Sheeran’s pregnant wife, was told she had a tumour which she couldn’t get treatment for until after the birth of his daughter, Lyra Antarctica.
Within a week, Sheeran replaced a decade’s worth of work with his deepest, darkest thoughts.
Sheeran says the visual album for Subtract is now available on YouTube with 14 music videos directed by Mia Barnes.
