The City of Joburg has said non-complaint spaza shops will be shut down.
The City of Johannesburg has issued a directive to non-compliant spaza owners and shared plans to deal swiftly with those not following standards.
MMC for Public Safety in the City of Joburg, Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku spoke to Phemelo about spaza shop patrollers that will be deployed from the end of October to conduct food quality inspections and will shut down non-compliant spaza shops

Tshwaku said at the end of this month, a squad of spaza store patrollers will be sent out in reaction to deaths that have been reported to be connected to food poisoning.

They will be in charge of monitoring, conducting inspections for food quality, and, if required, shutting down spaza stores that don’t comply.
He also addressed the issue of spaza shops that reopen as soon as they get shut down saying to address the issue of scarce inspectors and human resources, the city is starting to educate 600 patrollers with environmental health experts. Their main responsibility will be to spot non-compliance.
