English referee Wayne Barnes to officiate Springboks and All Blacks Rugby final
The Rugby World Cup final between South Africa and New Zealand will be supervised by a referee from England, Wayne Barnes on Sunday in Paris.
Barnes is anticipated to retire his whistle after his fifth World Cup, having officiated 110 Test matches since 2006.
Barnes has participated in five international tournaments overall; the first one was hosted in France by coincidence in 2007.
Barnes has not officiated a South African match since the encounter against France during the November end-of-year series.
“On behalf of World Rugby, I would like to congratulate Wayne Barnes on his deserved appointment as the Rugby World Cup 2023 final referee.
“Such an appointment is a reflection of Wayne’s calibre, not just at this tournament but over a distinguished career.” Sir Bill Beaumont, chairman of World Rugby
