The Gauteng provincial government has had to return just over R1 billion to the National Treasury after its health and education departments failed to utilize their allocated budgets for the 2024/25 financial year.
This was revealed by the head of the Provincial Treasury, Ncumisa Mnyani, during a media briefing on the state of the province’s finances on Monday.
Mnyani stated that Gauteng underspent its budget by a total of R1.8 billion, with a significant R1.041 billion of that originating from the health and education sectors.
While the provincial government expressed optimism that the National Treasury would approve the rollover of approximately R1.4 billion of the unspent funds for reallocation within the province, a remaining R295 million was at risk of being forfeited.
Speaking at the same briefing, Gauteng Finance MEC Lebogang Maile indicated that the province had formally requested the National Treasury to allow the rollover of this R295 million.
He expressed confidence in their application, stating that thorough due diligence had been conducted, and only applications meeting the necessary criteria for rollover were submitted. However, if these applications are unsuccessful, the province stands to lose around R400 million in unspent funds.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to Deputy Director General at Gauteng Treasury, Mncedisi Vilakazi, about the reasons why over R1 billion was returned to the National Treasury
