The first group of white South Africans who were granted refugee status by the United States took off from O.R. Tambo International Airport on Sunday night.
According to reports, the group boarded a chartered plane and was seen off by a handful of family members.
This follows an executive order initiated by American President Donald Trump in February 2025, giving them refugee status in the U.S.
The Trump administration is reportedly planning to send US government officials to Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia for an event marking the group’s arrival on Monday.
Meanwhile, the South African government has slammed the resettlement of South African Afrikaners, saying the move is politically motivated and designed to bring the country’s democracy into question.
In light of the Democratic Alliance (DA) recently winning a Constitutional Court case, ruling that South African citizens do not automatically lose their citizenship when they acquire citizenship in another country, the Siz The World team deliberated on the long game the DA is playing to take over power in the next national elections.
