What happens when mommy (EFF) and daddy (ANC) fight, coalition governments fail, this was made clear with the fallout between the two parties over Ekurhuleni.
On Tuesday, 08 November, Tania Campbell of the Democratic Alliance (DA) was re-elected as the mayor of Ekurhuleni, defeating Jongizizwe Dlabathi of the African National Congress (ANC).
This caused the ANC to hit back at the EFF for not working together to make their alliance work to their benefit.
ANC regional chairperson, Mzwandile Masina called the EFF’s demands unreasonable, which cost the ANC Ekurhuleni.
Despite lengthy negotiations between the two parties, a mutual agreement was not reached and the EFF put forward its intention to run with their own candidate.
The complete lack of communication between the ANC and EFF, put the votes back in the DA’s hands.
Just last month, Campbell was ousted via a motion of no confidence.
A proposal for the election of an EFF mayor in the city was rejected on Tuesday, by the ANC’s provincial executive committee in Gauteng, ending negotiations between the ANC and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
But have the multi-party coalitions worked? Many including the ANCYL don’t believe it has.
ANCYL spokesperson Simphiwe Patose says the ANC proving that it cannot secure votes again is not a good sign.
