Inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo’s retirement from international football, the Kaya Breakfast team shared the personal goals they’ve accepted may never become reality.

In Wednesday’s edition of Kaya Breakfast with DJ Fresh and Thato Mataboge, the pair asked listeners a thought-provoking question: Is there something you’ve pursued with all your might before finally accepting it may never happen?
The conversation was inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent retirement from international football after Portugal’s exit from the FIFA World Cup.
Thato said: “We’re talking about conceding. In light of Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal crashing out of the World Cup, the one trophy that always eluded him was the World Cup. He then announced his retirement, so he finally got to a place where he said, ‘I can’t win this trophy anymore.'”
He added that, as heartbreaking as it can be, time and age often bring us to a point where we accept that some long-held dreams may never become reality.
DJ Fresh got the team laughing when he shared that he’s been trying to get a six-pack since he was a teenager.
“What I’ve realised is that I’m a big-boned guy, and for me to get a six-pack, I’d have to lose so much weight that I’d look like a lollipop. I don’t want to look like a lollipop,” he said.
“I’ve conceded that a six-pack is not my thing. I’ve given up on it. It’s not going to happen, and that’s okay,” DJ Fresh added.
Juliet Joseph said she’s given up on choosing her child’s clothes, remembering her dreams, and eating healthy all the time, among other things.
Sports presenter Mpho Maboi compared the discussion to Novak Djokovic’s pursuit of more tennis titles.
She said there comes a point where chasing one final achievement can risk overshadowing an already remarkable legacy, adding that for athletes of his stature, it’s no longer about the money.
Mbali Thethani also reflected on Serena Williams’ recent return to tennis, questioning whether trying to extend an already legendary career was worth risking her legacy.
Is there a goal or dream you’ve accepted may never happen?
