A 47-year-old man who is accused of attempted murder for allegedly intentionally infecting his 47-year-old partner with HIV has been granted R2,000 bail.
He appeared before the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 21 August 2026.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the accused and the complainant were in a relationship from October 2025 until June 2026.
“The accused allegedly misrepresented his HIV status by informing the complainant that he was HIV-negative. According to the allegations, on 26 June 2026, the complainant discovered antiretroviral (ARV) medication in the accused’s bag and confronted him about it.
“The accused allegedly admitted that he was HIV-positive and further stated that he had intentionally infected her because he did not want her to be in a relationship with another person,” said NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana.
The complainant underwent an HIV test shortly after discovering the medication and was informed that she had tested positive. She subsequently reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest of the accused.
The matter was postponed to 27 August 2026 for the determination of a regional court date.
