- Four current and former City of Ekurhuleni employees have been arrested by the Madlanga Commission Recommendations Task Team.
- The arrests follow recommendations for criminal investigations after the Commission heard evidence relating to alleged corruption within the municipality.
- The suspects are expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court, while the identities of those arrested are expected to be confirmed in court.
Four current and former City of Ekurhuleni employees have been arrested by the Madlanga Commission Recommendations Task Team.
The group was arrested on Wednesday evening in various parts of Johannesburg. Their arrests were confirmed by South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.
“Those arrested include current and former employees of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. The suspects are expected to appear before the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning,” said Mathe.
Although the suspects have not yet been identified, as they are still due to appear in court, controversial Ekurhuleni City Manager Imogen Mashazi is believed to be among those arrested.
Mashazi was one of the witnesses who appeared before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry when it heard testimony relating to alleged corruption within the embattled municipality.
She was also accused of protecting suspended EMPD acting chief commissioner Julius Mkhwanazi from disciplinary action during her tenure as city manager.
Mashazi has also faced scrutiny over a R3.5 million private jet trip to London in 2022, which was reportedly funded by companies that had benefited from municipal tenders awarded by the City of Ekurhuleni. One of the companies is alleged to belong to controversial businessman Ze Nxumalo.
However, the Commission’s findings extended beyond the allegations against Mashazi and recommended criminal investigations into several current and former metro and EMPD officials after uncovering evidence that required further investigation.
The latest arrests come just hours after the arrest of suspended Ekurhuleni head of legal services Kemi Behari on Wednesday afternoon, shortly after his disciplinary hearing.
Behari was reportedly arrested by the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).
