Yesterday, 4 November, South Africans went to the polls to have their say in the future of their local municipalities. For thousands of young people, it was a first: their first opportunity to make their mark and exercise their democratic right to vote.
Kaya 959 put those first-time voters in the spotlight on Kaya Breakfast. DJ Fresh and Thato stepped out of the studio and took to the streets to give first-time voters an Election Day wake-up call.
Their first stop was Diepkloof, Soweto, where they woke up Lwandle, an 18-year-old in Grade 11.
Next was Midrand, where they woke up 19-year-old student Mpumelelo. Tbose joined them for this one as a special guest.
The third wake-up took them to Centurion, where they woke up Bongani, an 18-year-old pupil.
Parents, family members and friends had been invited to put their first-time voter forward by WhatsApping the keyword “ELECTION”, along with the voter’s name and surname, to 063 688 0959.
Three young South Africans started Election Day by heading out to cast their first vote, and the results are now coming in. Follow them as they unfold here.
