Taryn Gill, founder of The Perfect Hair is on a mission to change the game in the African haircare market.
The “curl coach” believes she’s not selling haircare products but rather self-love, as she wants to show women how to embrace their natural hair.
Taryn left behind an established marketing career to develop and launch her own haircare brand, which was created to plug a gap in the local marketplace for quality and natural haircare products for curly and coily hair textures.
Now in its 9th year, the proudly South African brand is successfully tapping into the positive trend of women embracing their natural beauty, with products designed for natural curls.
Crafted to meet the needs of African hair in African climates, Taryn’s products use high-tech conditioning polymers and botanically derived ingredients like mango butter, grapeseed and marula oil, and basil root extract to offer curl and coil control and care.
“That’s the key, when I started the haircare range it was all about the psycho-graphic of the consumer that I was talking to who could relate to their ‘hair going home,’ or their ‘hair mincing,’ when they’re sweating in the nightclub.
It was about understanding the consumer’s need to shift to something completely natural so she could feel good in her skin, and comfortable with her hair.
The Perfect Hair is perfectly you, it’s embracing your hair as it grows out of your head.
Going into haircare after 17-years of hardcore media was a huge step, but it was the first time that I actually felt that I had come home.
My sister was one of the first people who said to me, well that’s no surprise, you’ve had that Afro all your life.”

All products in Taryn’s haircare range are vegan and free from silicone, parabens, petroleum and sulphates, and are sold in PET recyclable packaging.
The Perfect Hair was started by Gill on a shoestring budget, but the brand caught the attention of beauty distributor Sunpac, which recently concluded a deal with the brand to scale the Johannesburg-based brand.
Taryn Gill shares that her haircare range will be making their return back onto Clicks shelves soon.
