The formal, non-agricultural sectors of South Africa’s economy lost 119 000 jobs in the second quarter (Q2), falling from 10 067 000 in March 2022 to 9 948 000 in June 2022.
The construction, business services, and community services sectors saw the most job losses.
Kaya BIz with Guguletthu Mfuphi spoke to Matlapane Masupye, Director for Employment Statistics at Stats SA who broke down what the statistics mean.

According to South Africa’s most recent Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) Report, the community services sector had a 100 000 job loss, followed by the business services sector with a 15 000 job loss and the construction sector with a 13 000 job loss.

While the electricity sector lost 1000 jobs in Q2, manufacturing lost 12,000 jobs.
