Sonja Carstens, Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA) spokesperson says job losses in the automotive sector and retail stores is looming.
MISA says a number of dealerships and retail stores have announced their intent to restructure, which could mean a spate of retrenchments is on the cards.
Carstens says 11 retail stores that are linked to an international tyre producer, have given MISA notice of a proposed closure.
Speaking to Gugulethu Mfuphi on Kaya Biz, Carstens says a shrinking South African economy has taken its toll on the automotive sector.
“It is unsure at this stage how many employees will be affected.
The automotive retail industry is struggling under the daily loadshedding, skyrocketing fuel prices, and high interest rates. New vehicle sales also slumped in September putting the industry under further pressure.”

News of more job losses in the automotive sector and retail stores comes after Nissan South Africa announced plans to restructure its Rosslyn plant in Pretoria next year.
Nissan SA expects to reduce its 1 600 staff contingent by 400 employees, owing to the brand no longer producing the NP200 bakkie.
Production of the NP200 will be halted in March 2024, and the company has entered a formal consultation phase to restructure.
