DA calls for Nqakula to probe the parliament secretary’s R4.4 million rand per annum salary.
Parliament secretary Xolile George received a pay increase of about 70% from the National Assembly Speaker and the NCOP Chairperson, bringing his yearly compensation to R4.4 million, making his annual salary more than that of President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The Democratic Alliance has called for Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to be investigated over the exorbitant salary of Parliament secretary.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to DA Chief Whip, Siviwe Gwarube about the party’s calls for Speaker of Parliament, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to be investigated for allegedly misleading the National Assembly over the salary of secretary to Parliament Xolile George.

According to Gwarube, The DA will be filing a formal complaint as soon as possible with the Powers and Privileges Committee to look into the Executive Authority’s violation of their oath of office and betrayal of the values of accountability and transparency.
They have also stated that Both Mapisa-Nqakula and Masondo have flagrantly violated their Code of Conduct, Code of Ethics for Members of the Executive Authority, and their duty to oversee the financial administration of Parliament.
Gwarube gave the background of why the DA has issues with what they call an exorbitant increase.
“In June 2022, parliament appointed a secretary to parliament which is technically the institution’s CEO. The Speaker is the political head of the institution, and the secretary is the CEO or the administrative head of Parliament. We then went to advertise for the post, it was advertised as R2,2 million per annum, we were very clear as political parties because the appointment of the secretary was brought before the house, as a form of a motion. We were clear that whatever happens, we do not have salary increases that are beyond whatever was budgeted for this role parliament.” said Gwarube,
