Tyla’s song ‘Water’ becomes the first SA song in 55 years to be on the Billboard Hot 100
South African artist Tyla is doing big things on the global stage, and Mzansi is loving every second of it.
Following weeks of TikTok trending, South African music sensation Tyla’s viral smash single “Water” made its Billboard Hot 100 debut.
The best songs from a variety of genres are listed on the Billboard Hot 100 list. Since jazz great Hugh Masekela’s “Grazing in the Grass” came out 55 years ago, Water is the first solo song by a South African musician to reach the top of the charts.
However, Tyla, a musician from South Africa, is the youngest person on the list at age 21.

Water was released in July, but it wasn’t until August that Tyla—full name Tyla Laura Seethal—began posting TikTok videos of herself dancing to the song.
Afrobeats, pop, R&B, and Amapiano—a kind of electronic dance music popular in South Africa—are among the genres that are blended together in this song.
Views on Tyla’s most well-known TikTok dance to her song have surpassed 70 million.
She recently did the challenge with a South African-based Swazi artist, who was recently nominated for a BET Award Uncle Waffle.
