Employed but unhappy? It’s more common than you might think and Boniwe Dunster, HR Executive at Lanseria International Airport joins Gugulethu Mfuphi on Kaya Biz to tackle career stagnation in 2024.
Boniwe says 3-months into 2024 and more professionals are stuck in a rut, questioning whether they are hitting the glass ceiling and are happy or not.
“It’s important to not be swallowed by the day-to-day activities of your job, and it is equally important to be visible and commited to what you aim to achieve in the role.
Whether this mean receiving feedback from line managers, co-workers or stakeholders, it’s important that you use this an opportunity to learn and learning can be on the job training, job shadowing, anything that can keep you relevant and on top of your game.
Sometimes it’s not your line manager’s responsibility to make sure that you are visible, it also depends on the energy you’re giving out and the commitment you show.”
Employed but unhappy
Boniwe says many employees get comfortable and hide behind the excuse “my work will speak for itself,” however she says that this is dangerous and could make it difficult to break free from this stagnant phase because complacency sets in.
The HR expert says this could lead to your career stalling, and employees checking out of the company mentally, and perhaps emotionally but remain employed physically.
In a previous discussion on the show Gugu covered how “grumpy staying” in an unhappy work environment can effect an employee’s mental health and impact the overall mood in the office.
