Dr Gloria Tshukudu, the first black woman to qualify as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon in South Africa joins Gugulethu Mfuphi on Kaya Biz, to share what this achievement has meant to her.
“I used to love reading and I first learnt about plastic surgery whilst reading one of the Danielle Steel books. Plastic and reconstructive surgery can improve a person’s confidence and sense of self-worth.
When I was studying, I saw first-hand how reconstructive surgery can have a huge benefit in a person’s life, and so I was inspired to do more.
I treat many cancer patients who come to me for reconstructive surgery, to repair the effects of having tumours removed, and trauma victims who have been in car accidents, or stabbed.
There’s always a misconception when people hear the word “plastic surgery”, because they think it’s just about aesthetic alterations, such as ‘boob jobs’, or BBLs.
Yes, in some cases it is purely for beauty reasons, but not always.”
Dr Gloria Tshukudu – the first black female plastic surgeon in SA
Dr Gloria Tshukudu graduated with a degree in medicine at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, previously known as Medical University of South Africa.
Thereafter, Dr Tshukudu then completed her internship at Paul Kruger Memorial Hospital in Rustenburg. She went on to receive a Master of Medicine degree at the University of Limpopo’s Ga-Rankuwa Medical University at the end of 2012.
In 2013, Dr Tshukude became the first black woman to qualify as a plastic and reconstructive surgeon in SA.
