Around 55% of all nationwide hijackings occur in Gauteng, owing to higher vehicle volumes in the province.
Gauteng is also still the province that experiences the highest volume of vehicle crime at 61% of total vehicle crime incidents, followed by KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) at 14% and the Western Cape at 09%.
The Tracker Vehicle Crime Index aggregates information from Tracker’s more than 1.1 million subscriptions, and the data shows that business vehicles are more likely to be targeted than personal vehicles.
Duma Ngcobo, Chief Operating Officer at Tracker joins Gugulethu Mfuphi on Kaya Biz to break down Tracker’s latest report on vehicle crime statistics.

While KZN business vehicles are more likely to encounter vehicle crime, Western Cape business vehicles are less likely to experience vehicle crime relative to the nationa business customer base, yet are six times more likely to be hijacked than stolen.
Second to Gauteng in terms of business vehicle hijaking volume, the Western Cape has a hijacking to theft ratio of 85% to 15%.
Data from Tracker shows a nationwide trend where a higher number of vehicles are reported hijacked on Fridays between 11h00 and 15h00.
Stolen vehicles are mainly reported on Saturdays between 11h00 and 15h00.
Tracker has recovered 122 518 vehicles, assisted in 20 784 arrests and the seizure of 1 104 firearms to date.
