Gauteng tops the list of hijacking hotspots in South Africa with over 3000 vehicles hijacked in the province between April and June 2022.
The latest hijacking numbers comes from the first quarter crime statistics released by Police Minister Bheki Cele on Friday, 19 August.
Overall hijackings during this period increased by 720, with Gauteng accounting for more than half of these.
There were 409 more hijackings in the province, taking the number of vehicles taken through aggravated robbery up to 3, 113.
Mpumalanga was the only province to note a decrease in hijackings, and the Western Cape was the second highest hijacking hotspot in the country.
Areas in Gauteng that reported the biggest numbers of hijackings were:
- Moroka – 70
- Sandringham – 69
- Midrand – 68
- Vosloorus – 65
- Alexandra – 63
- Kempton Park – 57
- Olievenhoutbosch – 57
