Two boys who allegedly stabbed and killed their fellow schoolmate will remain behind bars after their case was postponed to 7 July 2025 for a Schedule 6 bail application.
Mlehalinye Montasi (20) and Kgotlhello Mathabatha (19) briefly appeared before the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrates’ Court last week.
The duo is facing a charge of premeditated murder for allegedly stabbing and killing Grade 11 pupil, Lethabo Mokonyane Matula.
It is alleged that they attacked the deceased after school, outside the school premises, just as Mokonyane Matula was about to board a bus home.
One of the suspects allegedly held the deceased while the other stabbed him twice in the stomach with a sharp object. The two then fled the scene.
Mokonyane Matula succumbed to his injuries a few hours later after being admitted to a local clinic.
His death has sparked public outrage, with NGOs and civil society organisations calling on authorities to implement urgent measures to tackle violent behaviour and bullying in public schools.
Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube and Police Minister Senzo Mchunu have since launched the ‘Safe Schools Protocol’.
This collaborative protocol between the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Department of Basic Education (DBE) aims to create safer learning environments for both learners and school staff across South Africa.
Mokonyane Matula was laid to rest at his family home in Tshwane on Saturday, 28 June 2025.
