After a recent visit to her parents, the listener’s wife was physically assaulted by her dad and came home limping. Now, he is torn between going to the police to report the assault or letting it go.
“I have been married for seven years, and my wife often visits her parents. One morning, she walked in on her father choking her mother, and she pushed her dad, who ended up beating her. She returned home limping with a blue eye, and I asked her that we go and open a case against her father.
“She once told me how her father would abuse her mother right in front of her. Now that they have kissed and made up, I am meant to be the bad person here. The father-in-law hates me, and the mother-in-law is not speaking to me because my wife was brutally beaten. None of her parents came to apologize to me or even ask how I felt about it. Should I be the one apologizing or just leave it as it is?”

One listener notes that there is nothing the aggrieved husband has to apologize for. “People must know where you stand when it comes to violence. If need be, you must call them out. This is utterly wrong,” she said, while another listener advised the husband to let it go.
“He must just let them be because it is something that started when he was not there. It’s their daughter. Leave them alone and don’t approach them because it’ll come across as disrespectful. Leave it alone unless your wife decides to go and address it,” cautioned the listener.

1.2 Parliament assented to POPIA on 19 November 2013. The commencement date of section 1, Part A of Chapter 5, section 112 and section 113 was 11 April 2014. The commencement date of the other sections was 1 July 2020 (with the exception of section 110 and 114(4). The President of South Africa has proclaimed the POPI commencement date to be 1 July 2020.
