The International Pentecostal Holiness Church (IPHC), associated with Eskom’s board chairperson, Mpho Makwana, has garnered attention for owing over R2 million in unpaid electricity bills. The Sunday Times reported the issue, sparking a debate over accountability.
Eskom swiftly responded, asserting that Makwana is not responsible for the church’s debt and is unaware of its payment arrangements. This sparked discussions on 959 Breakfast, inviting listeners to weigh in on whether Makwana’s dual roles should hold him accountable.
The 959 Breakfast team and callers delved into the dynamics, with Mpho Maboi pointing out board responsibilities and Sizwe Dhlomo raising questions about the timing and accumulation of the debt.
“You also have to ask yourself, when he was appointed chairman of Eskom, what the debt was? I can’t imagine that R2 million in electricity debt accumulated over the course of the year,” said Dhlomo.
