Babita Deokaran’s killers plead guilty to her 2021 murder, each receiving ranging sentences between 6 and 22 years.
Deokaran was gunned down outside her Mondeor home in August 2021. She was parked outside of her property after dropping her daughter off at school.
The 53-year-old high-ranking government official was said to be a witness in a Covid-19 PPE procurement scandal which was estimated at over R330 million.
A single mother, Deokaran was the Chief Director of Financial Accounting at Gauteng’s Health Department at the time of her death.
The six men charged with the murder of whistleblower, Babita Deokaran, have been given sentences ranging between 6 and 22 years.
On Tuesday, 22 August, the State and Defence entered into a plea agreement at the Gauteng High Court, with the matter being postponed last week to allow time to finalise negotiations.
The six men, Phinda Ndlovu, Phakamani Hadebe, Siphiwe Mazibuko, Sanele Mbhele, Zitha Radebe, Siphakanyisa Dladla face charges of murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Babita’s brutal murder has highlighted the importance of protection for whistleblowers in the country. Her murder was called out for being a hit from the start, as nothing was stolen from her home or vehicle.
While the six receive their time behind bars, they have not disclosed the name of the mastermind behind the hit on Deokaran.
