Internationally acclaimed South African comedian, Trevor Noah recently opened up about his experience with imposter syndrome, among other things.
After enjoying great success over the years, Trevor pointed out that we take for granted what imposter syndrome is, saying, “What we don’t understand is that because we are so far removed from the process, we oftentimes do not know the inner workings of anyone that we appreciate.”
Trevor recalled hearing about Lionel Messi, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, facing similar challenges. He said, “I remember hearing that Lionel Messi would throw up before many games. Some of his teammates talk about this, and you go, Why? I mean, this is Lionel Messi.”
Additionally, Trevor explained that what then happens to us is that we find ourselves in similar situations. “And because nobody has told us what that situation entails, we then end up in a space where we feel like we don’t belong because we don’t have the inner monologue that matches the outer dialogue that we were experiencing other people with,” said the comedian.
The comedian is currently in Mzansi until the 15th of September as part of his comedy tour.
