This week on 959 Breakfast with Dineo Ranaka and Sol Phenduka we are decoding legendary South African musician Thandiswa Mazwai.
To Dineo and Sol’s surprise, Thandiswa struggles with imposter syndrome despite her success.
“I have a big imposter syndrome. I do not get high on my own supply.”
The singer attributes this to her childhood.
“I think when I was younger I wasn’t very much aware of that voice. It just became louder and louder as I got older.
“When I tell people is that the thing about being a young person is that someone has to see what nobody sees.”
Thandiswa says kids need to be heard.
“We really need to give kids a chance, somebody’s voice starts off as a tiny little spark. Before you know it it’s a raging flame.”
Explaining the reason for changing her name from Thandiswa to King Tha, the Bongo Maffin member notes that she has never been comfortable with fame.
“I’ve always had to create an alter ego because I was never comfortable with fame. When I started being famous people started asking for photographs.”
I would put my name on somebody’s paper or T-shirt and I would feel like a part of me is going. If anybody has my autograph it’s Thandiswa scratched out.
