There have been mixed reactions on social media following a viral radio interview with South African media personality and socialite Nonhle Thema.

Much of the discussion has centred on her claim that she “introduced Twitter” (now X) to South Africa, with some users mocking the remark while others argued that it has overshadowed her broader contribution to the entertainment industry.

Supporters have shared lengthy posts and videos reflecting on Thema’s influence, with many saying younger generations may not fully appreciate the impact she had on South African celebrity culture during the height of her career.

Popular South African content creator Wandile Sphelele said he would not “sit back and watch people disrespect” Thema, arguing that she played a significant role in shaping celebrity culture.

He said people often criticise individuals who are confident and self-aware, qualities he believes Thema has consistently displayed.

“We understand how things went down for Nonhle Thema, and this is just adding salt to the wound. How do you interview this legendary woman about her legacy and then act surprised when she gives you a rundown of it?” he said.

Sphelele also argued that Thema rose to prominence before the rise of social media and described her as one of South Africa’s most influential celebrities, saying she inspired personalities such as Bonang Matheba and Khanyi Mbau.

He further referenced Thema’s international work, including her partnership with Dark and Lovely, and repeated claims she has previously made about influencing global fashion and beauty trends.

Debate over past claims

One of the claims that resurfaced following the interview is Thema’s previous statement that singer Rihanna adopted red hair after the two met. Thema has previously said Rihanna complimented her hairstyle and later debuted a similar look.

While the claim has been widely discussed online, it has not been independently verified.

Since the interview gained traction, social media has been flooded with commentary, with some users referring to Thema as “the blueprint” of South African celebrity culture, while others remain critical of some of her remarks.

Thema has also been sharing archival clips from her reality television show and past Dark and Lovely campaigns, highlighting milestones from her career.

She also thanked supporters on social media.

“Thank you all 4 the love. I see you,” she wrote.

Daughter of Cynthia Shange

Thema is the daughter of the late Cynthia Shange, who died in April 2026 at the age of 76.

In 1972, Shange became one of the first Black South African women to gain international recognition in pageantry after winning the Miss South Africa title and placing fifth at the Miss World competition in London.

Early career and influence

Thema rose to prominence as a presenter on Channel O, where she hosted shows including O-Access.

Her career peaked during the early 2000s, and she is widely regarded by many as one of the pioneers of modern South African celebrity culture.

In 2011, however, she faced significant public backlash following a series of controversial posts on Twitter in which she made several boastful remarks, including referring to herself as a “god.”

The controversy led to widespread criticism and the loss of several endorsement deals, including a major ambassadorial partnership with hair brand, Dark and Lovely.

She is also one of the first famous individuals to experience cancel culture in South Africa.
