Outside of music, the late DJ Sumbody was also known for his business acumen.
The serial businessman owned a few clubs in Pretoria and one in Cape Town.
Speaking at his memorial service on Wednesday in Johannesburg, his business partner Kagiso Setsetse says he’s been friends with DJ Sumbody for over 22 years.
Although they come from two different worlds – they had a lot in common.
“For many years we went through a lot together. We were inseparable.”
Kagiso and Sumbody founded Ayepyep Lifestyle Lounge in 2016.
While deciding on a name, it was DJ Sumbody who suggested Ayepyep.
“I trusted his judgment. It was my last money and I have kids. We had to borrow money from family because we didn’t have enough,” shares Kagiso.
The two went on to create many jobs for musicians and suppliers.
“When we closed for three months during the lockdown people kept on calling us to tell us that they are hungry. That’s when we realized the value we play in society.”
Setsetse hasn’t come to terms with the passing of his friend and business partner.
“Each morning I wake up and I pinch myself because I keep wanting to wake up from that bad dream.
“Things will never be the same, we will be there and carry the legacy but the reality is that it’ll never be the same.”
DJ Sumbody will be laid to rest on Saturday in Limpopo.
