Comedian and actor Desmond Dube reportedly owes South African Revenue Services (SARS) over a milli in unpaid taxes.
This according to a report by City Press which claims that Dube has been given 10-days to settle his outstanding debt with the revenue service.
However, Dube hit back, disputing the R1.4 million amount that the publication says is owed by the “How To Ruin Christmas” star.
While the correct amount that Dube owes cannot be disclosed, City Press claims that Dube received a letter last week indicating that more than R1 million has to be paid within a 10-day timeframe.
The letter reads, “According to records of SARS, you have failed to pay your tax debt for one or more tax years and tax periods. You are hereby requested to make full payment within 10-days from the date of this letter of demand.
You may within 10 business days from the date of this letter of demand apply for an of the following remedies:
- payment instalments where you are unable to pay the full amount,
- suspension of the debt where you intend to submit or have submitted a formal dispute,
- compromise of a portion of the tax where this will provide a higher return to the fiscus than liquidation, sequestration or other collection measures.”
In response Desmond Dube said the matter is being dealt with by his lawyers and he wasn’t prepared to reveal the full amount owed.
“I’m not sure who your source is, but the numbers are totally incorrect. The case is remedial and going through the legal process.”
Desmond Dube responded to a report he owes SARS R1.4 million
Dube is not the first South African celebrity to be embroiled in a huge unpaid tax saga, as it was revealed last month that Trevor Noah’s mother owes SARS R24 million.
