The Department of Basic Education (DBE) will need to wait for the Pretoria High Court’s decision on the publishing of matric results.
This after Afriforum and two other parties have opposed the DBE decided to protect the identities of learners and abide by the POPIA act.
On Wednesday, 12 January the Information Regulator met with the DBE to discuss the conditions around the publishing of matric results.
According to the Regulator, POPIA has clear rules on how personal information can be disseminated.
Afriforum has approached the court with an application to overturn the DBE’s decision which will be brought forward on Tuesday, 18 January.
According to Afriforum’s Natasha Venter, Manager for Education Rights, “information must, within the ambit of the law, be freely available “in a democratic country”, which is a principle that the department should support.
The department has set up an online portal, where the class of 2021 are able to access their partial results.
However, many are facing technical errors on the platform.
For those without access to the internet, results will be released to matriculants at their schools.
Matric results will be released on 21 January.
