M-Net has revealed that its local telenovela, ‘Legacy’, has been cancelled after a two-year run. The channel says it will be “exploring new avenues” in order to focus on limited series.
“Tshedza – the production house for Legacy – will conclude the shooting of the second season in February 2022, however viewers will continue to enjoy the show on their screens until September 2022,” M-Net said in a statement.
Nomsa Philiso, Executive Head: Programming, MultiChoice Group, says the success of the channel’s local strategy depends on how well they understand their customers.
“Whilst Legacy is a popular show, our M-Net 101 customers have indicated that they now want more limited series rather than long-running telenovelas,” she said.
Many ‘Legacy’ viewers were sad to see the show come to an end. However, some believe it is the right decision.
“You know even though I like Legacy, I think M-Net is right to pivot into limited series, telenovelas are so hard to keep up with,” one Twitter user wrote.
‘Legacy’ is the latest local show to be cancelled. ‘Rhythm City, ‘Isidingo’, and ‘Isibaya” were all canned in recent years.
“I have met some absolutely beautiful people on this journey. And I am grateful for every last one of you,” Chris Q. Radebe, who plays Dabula, wrote on Instagram.
The ‘Isibaya’ cast wrapped up an emotional final day on set in February. The final episode of ‘Rhythm City” aired in July.

Good news for ‘Legacy’ cast members
Despite the sad news, three ‘Legacy’ cast members will have a lot to celebrate in 2022. Jay Anstey, Reandi Grey, and Mary-anne Barlow are expecting in the new year.
The women play sisters on the show.
“Yes… ALL three “Price” sisters on ‘Legacy’ are PREGNANT at the same time! All with girls!! It wasn’t planned but it is a miracle! My bestie @cheerfullygrey her second little girl and our favorite big sis @maryanne.barlow having her first! I cannot wait for play dates and for our girls to all be best friends (even if they don’t want to),” Jay wrote on Instagram.
All three women decided to have a joint maternity shoot to celebrate their exciting news.
